हरिहर काका की स्थिति की तुलना मझधार में फँसी नाव पर सवार लोगों से इस आधार पर की गई है कि जैसे उस नाव के यात्री चिल्लाकर भी अपनी रक्षा नहीं कर सकते — उनकी चिल्लाहट सागर की लहरों में विलीन हो जाती है और मौन होकर जल-समाधि लेना ही विकल्प रह जाता है — उसी प्रकार हरिहर काका भी असहाय और दिशाहीन स्थिति में घिरे हैं। एक ओर भाइयों का स्वार्थ है, दूसरी ओर महंत का लालच। वे न 'हाँ' कह सकते हैं, न 'ना'। भीतर से छटपटाहट और बेचैनी है, पर कोई राह नहीं। जीने की लालसा होने पर भी अपनी रक्षा असंभव जान पड़ती है।
