Three functions of a political party are:

1. Contesting Elections: Political parties put forward candidates to contest elections. In most democracies, candidates are chosen by the party and campaign under the party's name and symbol.

1. Making Policies and Programmes: Parties present their policies and programmes to the voters. The party that wins elections puts its policies into practice in the government.

1. Playing the Role of Opposition: Parties that lose elections sit in opposition, criticise the government's failures, and mobilise public opinion against it.
