Answer the following:
  1. (i) While electrolysing water before passing the current some drops of an acid are added. Why ? Name the gases liberated at cathode and anode. Write the relationship between the volume of gas collected at anode and the volume of gas collected at cathode.
  2. (ii) What is observed when silver chloride is exposed to sunlight ? Give the type of reaction involved.

(i) A few drops of acid (dilute H₂SO₄) are added to water to make it a good conductor of electricity (pure water is a poor conductor).

Relationship: Volume of H₂ at cathode : Volume of O₂ at anode = 2 : 1

(ii) When silver chloride (AgCl) is exposed to sunlight, it turns grey due to decomposition into silver (Ag) and chlorine (Cl₂).
